Biomass Partitioning Following Defoliation of Annual and Perennial Mediterranean Grasses Ecology and Society
Gutman, Mario; Agricultural Research Organization; mgutman@shani.net; Noy-Meir, Imanuel; Hebrew University of Jerusalem; noymeir@agri.huji.ac.il; Pluda, Daniel C; Volcani Center;; Seligman, No'am; Volcani Center; noamseli@netvision.net.il; Rothman, Steven; ;; Sternberg, Marcelo; Tel Aviv University; MarceloS@tauex.tau.ac.il.
A two-year experiment was conducted in northeastern Israel to study the effects of various defoliation regimes on biomass partitioning between vegetative and reproductive structures in a perennial and an annual Mediterranean grass. Greater insight into the mechanisms regulating biomass partitioning after defoliation enables ecologists and rangeland managers to interpret and predict population and community dynamics in Mediterranean grasslands more efficiently. Two typical Mediterranean grasses, Triticum dicoccoides, an annual species, and Hordeum bulbosum, a perennial species, were grown in containers in the open. They were subjected to a series of defoliation treatments that comprised three clipping frequencies and three clipping heights in a full...

The effects of land abandonment on biodiversity have received considerable attention by scholars, but results are far from conclusive. Different cultural traditions of scientists seem to underlie the contrasting ways in which land abandonment is understood. Although the forest transition (FT) framework considers land abandonment as an opportunity for biodiversity conservation, European landscape ecologists characterize it as a threat. We use insights from both traditions to analyze the effects of land abandonment on landscape and biodiversity in a mountain area of metropolitan Barcelona. We do so through an in-depth historical case study covering a period of 160 years. A set of landscape metrics was applied to land-cover maps derived from cadastral...

Methods for Developing Multiscale Participatory Scenarios: Insights from Southern Africa and Europe Ecology and Society
Kok, Kasper; Wageningen University; Kasper.Kok@wur.nl; Biggs, Reinette (Oonsie); Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR); University of Wisconsin; biggs@wisc.edu; Zurek, Monika; Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); zurek@fao.org.
Scenario planning is increasingly recognized as a useful tool for exploring change in social-ecological systems on decadal to centennial time horizons. In environmental decision making, scenario development tends to include participatory methods for engaging stakeholders and is conducted at multiple scales. This paper presents insights from participatory scenario development in two separate multiscale environmental assessments. We find that, to engage stakeholders at multiple scales, it is important that the issues explored at each scale be relevant and credible to stakeholders at that scale. An important trade-off exists between maintaining relevance to stakeholders at different scales and maintaining consistency across scales to allow for comparison of...

Achieving Success under Pressure in the Conservation of Intensely Used Coastal Areas Ecology and Society
Micheli, Fiorenza; Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, California, USA; micheli@stanford.edu; Niccolini, Federico; Department of Economics, University of Macerata, Macerata, Italy; fniccolini@unimc.it.
Understanding how biological conservation and socioeconomic development can be harmonized in social-ecological systems is at the core of sustainability science. We present the case of a Mediterranean marine protected area (MPA), the Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo MPA, that exhibits high ecological performance under intense pressure from fishing, tourism, and coastal development. This case study illustrates how socioeconomic development and significant conservation benefits can coexist, even in a challenging context. Based on this case study, we present a framework for what elements and interactions have determined the high ecological performance of this MPA, and highlight the key leverages that have enabled ecosystem recovery. In particular, the most critical...

The Mediterranean region is of fundamental importance to Europe given its strategic position. The responsibility for its overall ecosystem integrity is shared by European Union Member States (EU-MS) and other Mediterranean countries. A juxtaposition of overlapping governance instruments occurred recently in the region, with the implementation of both the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for EU-MS and the Ecosystem Approach Strategy (ECAP) for all Mediterranean countries, including EU-MS. Both MSFD and ECAP are structured around vision-driven processes to achieve Good Environmental Status and a Healthy Environment, respectively. These processes have clear ecosystem-based, integrated policy objectives to guarantee the preservation and integrity of...

Oak Persistence in Mediterranean Landscapes: The Combined Role of Management, Topography, and Wildfires Ecology and Society
Holmgren, Milena; Resource Ecology Group, Wageningen University; milena.holmgren@wur.nl; Mohren, Godefridus M.J.; Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group, Wageningen University; frits.mohren@wur.nl.
Mediterranean ecosystems have been shaped by a history of human and ecological disturbances. Understanding the dynamics of these social-ecological systems requires an understanding of how human and ecological factors interact. In this study, we assess the combined role of management practices and biophysical variables, i.e., wildfire and topography, to explain patterns of tree persistence in a cork oak (Quercus suber L.) landscape of southern Portugal. We used face-to-face interviews with landowners to identify the management practices and the incentives that motivated them. We used aerial photographs and a Geographic Information System (GIS) to classify vegetation patch-type transitions over a period of 45 years (1958-2002) and logistic regression to...

COMPETITIVE EFFECTS OF THE ALIEN INVASIVE CENTAUREA SOLSTITIALISL. ON TWO CHILEAN BACCHARIS SPECIES AT DIFFERENT LIFE-CYCLE STAGES Gayana Botánica
Gómez-González,Susana; Cavieres,Lohengrin A; Torres,Patricio; Torres-Díaz,Cristian.
Several studies have revealed a variety of mechanisms of invasion of alien plant species. However, little is known on how those mechanisms and their associated effects on native species change across different life-cycle stages. Under controlled conditions, we assessed the interactions between the alien invasive species Centaurea solstitialis L. (Asteraceae) and two pioneer native species to the Chilean matorral; Baccharis linearis (Ruiz et Pav.) Pers. and B. paniculata DC. (Asteraceae). Competitive effects of the invader on natives were evaluated by combining different life-cycle stages: seed-seed, plant-seed, and plant-plant. Seed germination of C. solstitialis was explosive and much faster than that of the native species. The presence of C. solstitialis...

Two profiling floats, equipped with nitrate concentration sensors were deployed in the northwestern Mediterranean from summer 2012 to summer 2013. Satellite ocean color data were extracted to evaluate surface chlorophyll concentration at float locations. Time series of mixed layer depths and nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations were analyzed to characterize the interplay between the physical-chemical and biological dynamics in the area. Deep convection (mixed layer depth > 1000 m) was observed in January–February, although high-nitrate surface concentrations could be already observed in December. Chlorophyll increase is observed since December, although high values were observed only in March. The early nitrate availability in subsurface layers, which...

Physiological plasticity gives HABs species the ability to respond to variations in the surrounding environment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological and physiological variability in Alexandrium pacificum R.W. Litaker (Group IV) (former Alexandrium catenella) blooming in Annaba bay, Algeria. Monoclonal cultures of up to 30 strains of this neurotoxic dinoflagellate were established by the germination of single resting cysts from the surface sediment of this southern Mediterranean marine ecosystem. Ribotyping confirmed formally for the first time that A. pacificum is developing in Eastern Algerian waters. Toxin analyses of A. pacificum strains revealed substantial intraspecific variability in both the profile and toxin amount. However, the...

Hydrological changes in the Mediterranean Sea over the last 30,000 years ArchiMer
Essallami, L.; Sicre, M. A.; Kallel, N.; Labeyrie, L.; Siani, G..
Sea surface temperatures were reconstructed over the last 30,000 years from alkenone paleothermometry (SST-(alk)) and planktonic foraminifera assemblages using the Modern Analog Technique (MAT) (SST-(foram)) along two cores of the Mediterranean Sea: MD84-632 (Levantine basin) and MD04-2797 (Siculo-Tunisian Strait). Oxygen isotope of planktonic foraminifera G. bulloides for core MD04-2797 and G. ruber for core MD84-632 were also determined. SST-alk in the Levantine basin indicate colder values at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (similar to 14 degrees C) than earlier established from MAT, and a cooling amplitude of 6 degrees-7 degrees C, comparable to the central Mediterranean Sea. Climatic events such as the Younger Dryas (YD) and Heinrich events 1 and 2 (H1...

Multiple biomarkers of pollution effects in caged mussels on the Greek coastline ArchiMer
Tsangaris, C.; Kormas, K.; Strogyloudi, E.; Hatzianestis, I.; Neofitou, C.; Andral, Bruno; Galgani, Francois.
A suite of biomarkers was measured in caged mussels at areas impacted by different anthropogenic activities along the Greek coastline to assess biological effects of environmental pollution. Mussels were caged at coastal sites in the vicinity of major cities, in areas influenced by major industries, agricultural practices and in islands away from known sources of pollution. Biomarkers indicative of neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase, AchE), oxidative stress (catalase, CAT), phase 11 biotransformation of xenobiotics (glutathione S-transferase, GST), metal exposure (metallothioneins, MTs) and protein synthesis (RNA:DNA ratio) were measured to assess effects of various types of pollutants. AchE activity proved to be the most responsive biomarker with...

Growth of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lions based on conventional tagging ArchiMer
Mellon-duval, Capucine; De Pontual, Helene; Metral, Luisa; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of European hake was estimated from the results of a conventional tagging study in the Gulf of Lions, the first tagging experiment to have been undertaken on the species in Mediterranean waters. In all, 4277 hake 15–40 cm long were tagged and released on the inshore fishing grounds during spring 2006. The overall recapture rate was 6.5% and times-at-liberty ranged from 1 to 717 d. Growth rate in hake varied with size and sex. The estimated growth parameter (von Bertalanffy k) was estimated as double previously published values based on size frequency distribution in the area. Compared with recent growth parameters derived from the tagging experiments in the Bay of Biscay, k was estimated to be slightly lower in the Gulf of Lions. With this faster...

Impact of natural (waves and currents) and anthropogenic (trawl) resuspension on the export of particulate matter to the open ocean Application to the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferre, B; De Madron, X; Estournel, C; Ulses, C; Le Corre, Gildas.
Modern sediment deposits on continental margins form a vast reservoir of particulate matter that is regularly affected by resuspension processes. Resuspension by bottom trawling on shelves with strong fishing activity can modify the scale of natural disturbance by waves and currents. Recent field data show that the impact of bottom trawls on fine sediment resuspension per unit surface is comparable with that of the largest storms. We assessed the impact of both natural and anthropogenic processes on the dispersal of riverborne particles and shelf sediments on the Gulf of Lion shelf. We performed realistic numerical simulations of resuspension and transport forced by currents and waves or by a fleet of bottom trawlers. Simulations were conducted for a...

Wind and temperature controls on Alexandrium blooms (2000-2007) in Thau lagoon (Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Laanaia, Nabil; Vaquer, Andre; Fiandrino, Annie; Genovesi, Benjamin; Pastoureaud, Annie; Cecchi, Philippe; Collos, Yves.
Since 1998, blooms of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense in the lagoon of Thau developed regularly each autumn, reaching a maximum of several millions cells per liter in 2004. By contrast, spring blooms occurred only twice (in 2000 and 2007). During these periods, sea surface temperatures (SST) and the wind patterns appear to impact the bloom occurrences much more than the apparent limiting resources such as inorganic nutrients. The analysis of SST and wind from April to June and September to November (from 2000 to 2007) indicates first that there has to be an initial wind stress in order to resuspend the cysts buried in the sediment. Blooms then occur after a period of weak winds (<4 m s(-1)) and of stable SST close to 20 degrees C (+/- 2 degrees C)....

A comparative analysis of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense blooms in Annaba Bay (Algeria) and Thau lagoon (France); phosphorus limitation as a trigger ArchiMer
Hadjadji, Imene; Frehi, Hocine; Ayada, Lembarek; Abadie, Eric; Collos, Yves.
Environmental conditions ultimately leading to blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella/tamarense were investigated at two Mediterranean sites (Annaba Bay, Algeria and Thau lagoon, France). Three years were examined in details: 1992 (a pre-Alexandrium period), 2002 (a year with the first bloom in Annaba) and 2010 (a year with a major bloom in Annaba). Most conditions were similar, but ammonium concentrations were much higher in Annaba (up to 100 μM) than in Thau (up to 10 μM). First records of A. catenella/tamarense were in 1995 for Thau and 2002 for Annaba, and coincided with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) decreasing below a concentration of about 1 μM. No other environmental variable could be related to those blooms. Thus, it is likely...

Subjected to multiple modifications which are responsible for important disruption in the functionning of the lagoon ecosystem during the last decenies, this lagoon is one of the most important sites for the region economy. The aim of this study is to propose a knowledges synthesis utilizable for a future fitting and management water plan. In fact, many studies realized during the last years are obsolete or uncompleted to explain the present state. Hydrogeololical studies, the most important, are not completed to understand the karst-lagoon relations. The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin, must be considered to explain biogeochemical process and the sewage discharges dispersal in the lagoon. Crustal structure of the Ionian basin and eastern Sicily margin: results from a wide-angle seismic survey. ArchiMer
Dellong, David; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Kopp, Heidrun; Graindorge, David; Margheriti, Lucia; Moretti, Milena; Murphy, Shane; Gutscher, Marc-andre.
In the Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean) the slow convergence between Africa and Eurasia results in the formation of a narrow subduction zone. The nature of the crust of the subducting plate remains debated and could represent the last remnants of the Neo-Tethys ocean. The origin of the Ionian basin is also under discussion, especially concerning the rifting mechanisms as the Malta Escarpment could represent a remnant of this opening. This subduction retreat toward the south-east (motion occurring since the last 35 Ma) but is confined to the narrow Ionian Basin. A major lateral slab tear fault is required to accommodate the slab roll-back. This fault is thought to propagate along the eastern Sicily margin but its precise location remains controversial....
